Oracle Introduction

Overview on Oracle RDBMS

1) What is Data?

Data is a collection of raw facts, Data can be numbers, words, measurements, observations or even just descriptions of things.

2) What is Table?

Refers to data arranged in rows and columns.

3) What is Database?

A database is an organized collection of data.

4) What is Database Management System?

A database management system (DBMS) is a software package designed to define, manipulate, retrieve and manage data in a database.

5) About Relational Databases

Every organization has information that it must store and manage to meet its requirements. For example, a corporation must collect and maintain human resources records for its employees.

This information must be available to those who need it.

6) What is Oracle?

ORACLE is a fourth generation object-relational database management system (ORDBMS) from Oracle Corporation.

Oracle 1st version released in 1978.

Oracle Developed in Assembly Language, C, and C++ Languages.

ORACLE consists of many tools that allow us to create an application with ease and flexibility.

7) Latest version of Oracle
The latest version of Oracle’s database is Oracle 12c released in 2013, In Oracle 12c, ‘c’ stands for Cloud
8) SQL*Plus

SQL*plus is a tool that comes along with Oracle. It is used to issue SQL and SQL*PLUS commands. It provides command line interface through which we can enter SQL and SQL*PLUS commands.

SQL commands include commands of ANSI/ISO SQL and extra
commands added to ANSI SQL by oracle.

9) SQL*Loader

SQL*Loader - provides a summary of the commands that we will require to allow us to load data from a file to the database.

10) PL/SQL

PL/SQL is a procedural extension to Oracle SQL.
PL/SQL is integrated with Oracle Database, enabling us to use all of the Oracle Database SQL statements, functions, and data types. We can use PL/SQL to control the flow of a SQL program, use variables, and write error-handling procedures.

11) Java Program Units

Oracle Database can also store program units written in Java. A Java stored procedure is a Java method published to SQL and stored in the database for general use.

We can call existing PL/SQL programs from Java and Java programs from PL/SQL.

12) Portability of Oracle

One reason that Oracle has become the world dominant database is because it runs on every platform from a mainframe to a Macintosh.

Today, most shops run Oracle in UNIX, Linux, and Windows.

13) Oracle database objects

A database object in a relational database is a data structure used to either store or reference data.
Oracle Database Objects are:
  • Tables
  • Views
  • Indexes
  • Clusters
  • Synonyms
  • Sequences
  • Procedures
  • Functions
  • Packages
  • Triggers
14) Overview of Application Architecture

There are two common ways to architect a database: client/server or multi-tier. As internet computing becomes more prevalent in computing environments, many database management systems are moving to a multi-tier environment.

15) Data Storage

The Oracle RDBMS stores data logically in the form of tablespaces and physically in the form of data files.

16) Internationalization
Oracle Database software comes in 63 language-versions (including regional variations such as British English and American English).

17) What are the RDBMS available in the industry?
  • Oracle
  • MS SQL Server
  • SyBase
  • IBM DB@
  • Etc…
18) Who should learn SQL?
  • Database Developers
  • Database Administrators
  • Database Testers
